What keeps you going?

It really feels like we're in winter now, doesn't it? After the clocks have changed, it feels like we're living in a lot of darkness. And what's especially dark is that my boyfriend and I have just finished playing through Mario Wonder which was really keeping us going in the evenings... If you've not played it, just know you can turn Mario into an elephant who shouts 'Wowee Zowee!' So, now we're in the thick of conversation about what game of TV show will 'Wowee Zowee' us next - if you have any recommendations or things keeping you going, we'd love to hear them. The conversation about what keeps us going got me thinking about the staples I come back to time and time again. That, in turn, led me to three quotes I've had pinned to my desk at various points and I wanted to share them with you.

'Stories are the fire we carry to each other.' Bobette Buster This is actually the quote that inspired the name of Fireside Fundraising. I have always considered myself to be a storyteller. When I was younger, I actually wanted to be a journalist. But, when I met journalists... I changed my mind and realised that it was storytelling I really cared about. I've always looked for ways of explaining why stories are so important. There are SO many books on storytelling, but this quote was the exact summary I needed. Stories are what make us human. Stories are what keep us alive. Stories are the fire we carry. I'm really grateful to share in this community of storytellers with you. Thank you for carrying your fires.

'I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.' Angela Davies Olivia Andrews, the Partnerships Manager at Glitch, has this quote in her LinkedIn cover photo. When I saw Olivia's LinkedIn, I knew we'd be fast friends. Again, this quote uniquely summarises how I feel about fundraising. Fundraising is about telling important stories to the people that can change the ending. Often, when we're talking to major donors, corporate partners, or individuals, they can actually change their behaviour. By doing this, they can change how the story goes. Being a fundraiser and telling the right stories to the right audiences can really change what you can't accept. I love that process. It's always worth thinking about what you can't accept and why, and thinking about the baby steps you can take to change it.

'The essential difference between emotion and reason is that emotion leads to action while reason leads to conclusions.' Donald Calne This quote was presented by Meredith Niles at International Fundraising Congress 2023. It was my main takeaway of the conference. Anyone who has worked with me knows that I really play into how powerful our emotional brains are; why we need to evoke emotion in our fundraising, even when we're dealing with logic led business leaders. This quote is a perfect summary.

Without emotion, we don't take action. Without action, we don't light fires. Without fire, we can't change the things we can't accept.

The next few weeks and months are pretty emotionally cluttered. The nights are darker and the days are colder. But there's a warmth in our community, and I hope that you'll use that as your fire. I'd love to know what quotes keep you going, or any games or TV show recommendations you can make for Dom and I. Otherwise, I'll see you around the fireside.
